IMF SEES 61% HIKE IN MACAU’S GDP

The International Monetary Fund predicts Macau's economy to climb 61 per cent this year as it has started seeing recovery from the impact of the pandemic

The upturn follows last year's pandemic driven contraction of 56.3 per cent as the local gaming and tourism sectors suffered a hit caused by the global health crisis.

The strong rebound this time comes as the Region has also seen its gross gaming revenue picking up during the first quarter of this year.

Macau’s casino earnings have reached their highest monthly tally since the beginning of the pandemic in January of 2020.

GGR in March reached 8.31 billion patacas, a yearly increase of 58 per cent and a monthly drive of 13.6 per cent.

In its report, IMF also noted that the latest GDP growth projection for Macau in 2022 will be 43 per cent.
